The Feed Technology Project was established about 10 years ago to address the problem of inadequate quality aquafeeds available in South Africa and its neighboring countries. At that time nutritional research was limited and dedicated aquafeed manufacturers were scarce. With the later establishment of AquaNutro (Pty) Ltd, a dedicated aquafeed manufacturer with strong collaboration with the University of Stellenbosch, feeds of consistent quality and quantity were developed and produced. Efforts were directed mainly towards cost-effective extruded aquafeeds for locally-relevant species. These included feeds for rainbow trout, carp, tilapia, catfish, crocodile, marron, kob, abalone, turbot, shrimp and other ornamental species such as aquarium fish, goldfish and koi. Besides feed development ...and ingredient evaluation for the feed industry, research is furthered towards optimizing feeding management practices and related environmental considerations. Involvement includes technical support to established producers as well as emerging fish farmers from previously disadvantaged communities (Small Farmer Aquaculture Project). Through the University of Stellenbosch, the Feed Technology Project is also offering short courses (2-3 days), one-year certificate training and graduate and post-graduate courses in the field of fish nutrition and feeding management.
