Afzal, Animal Husbandry Commissoner, MINFAL, Dr. Rashid Anwar, DG NARC, Mr. Akbar Sharif, distinguished guests, participants, ladies and gentlemen, good morning and Assalam O Alaikum.
It is a matter of great pleasure, indeed a privilege for me to welcome you all to the National Conference on the Investment Opportunities in Livestock Sector. We feel honored to have you with us this morning.
Ladies and gentlemen, Agriculture remains the main stay of Pakistans economy. So far the emphasis remained focused on stable food and fiber crops. It augurs well however, that there is shift in these trends. Now horticulture crops, livestock, fisheries, and forestry are also attracting attention of the policy makers.
It is heartening to see that more recently; livestock production has been increasing steadily. Still, the contribution of livestock to the national economy has been underestimated, under valued and widely ignored. There are several reasons for this, The main reason is near lack of investment in this sector particularly because the livestock farmers themselves are resource poor. However, this situation seems to be changing. For sometimes now there has been an upsurge in the interest in livestock. Right from the President of the country to the Prime Minister and ministers as well as the provincial governments are keen to develop this sector. Banks are offering attractive terms for credits for the development of this sector. But as yet nothing much seem to have actually happened at the producers consumers level. The time is therefore, very right to examine the prospects for the development in this sector. The National Conference on the Investment Opportunities in Livestock Sector is therefore, being organized for the purpose by the Agricultural Foundation of Pakistan in collaboration with Habib Bank Limited, Pakistan Science Foundation and Pakistan Agriculture Research Council.
Prominent stake-holders associated with different aspects of livestock have been invited to participate in the deliberation of the conference. Specialists from the private and public sectors as well as the academia will be presenting papers on different aspects of livestock in Pakistan. This should lead to framing feasible and workable recommendations for the consideration of the Government for implementation.
